    Hot Cherry Crumble

There is a time and place for desserts of the highest order. Carefully measured. Whipped. Beaten. Sifted, powdered and la dee da. Then there are times for easy. Delicious. Comforting and warm. Recipes like this hot cherry crumble. Reminiscent of the memories of spice and cherries this warm dessert is truly one for the keeper file.

    Hot Cherry Crumble

An easy dessert that the family will adore…

How many times are you in the mood for something scrumptious and sweet, but you don’t feel like baking? Or maybe you do feel like baking, but nothing extravagant.

This crumble recipe is perfect for what I call “lazy baking”. Simple ingredients, easy method, eyeball measuring.

    Hot Cherry Crumble

Ingredients Needed to Make Hot Cherry Crumble:

    • Cherry pie filling
    • Old fashioned rolled oats
    • All purpose flour
    • Brown sugar – dark or light, doesn’t matter
    • Baking powder
    • Cinnamon + nutmeg
    • A pinch of salt
    • Chopped nuts – optional, but I love the extra flavor and texture
    • Butter

I like to pick a good quality of cherry pie filling so I know I’m getting nice, plump fruit. You can also use fresh cherries. Just pit them, add a sprinkle of flour and some sugar. The end result will not be as sweet as using canned pie filling, but still delish.

TIP: You can make this dessert using your favorite fruit pie filling…apple, peach, blueberry..you pick and choose. I like to keep a can or two on hand at all times for this occasion.

A note about the oats. You can use quick-cook oats if you prefer. The only type of oats I would NOT use for this cherry dessert recipe are steel cut oats.

If you enjoy cooking with oats, try our Fresh Apple Oatmeal Muffins or our Oatmeal No Bake Energy Bites. So wholesome and warming.

How to Make Cherry Crumble Dessert:

    1. First preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Position oven rack to center position. Very lightly spray a 1.5 quart baking dish with non-stick spray.
    2. Next, spread the cherry pie filling into the bottom of the dish.
    3. In a bowl, combine all the other ingredients. Stir until sand-like clumps form.
    4. Evenly sprinkle the topping over the fruit. This recipe makes A LOT of crumble, so be generous.
    5. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes or until golden. Remove from the oven and let rest 15 minutes.
    6. Serve hot with your favorite vanilla ice cream.

This dessert smells HEAVENLY when baking. The aroma of cinnamon and nutmeg drifts around your kitchen. This is when your spouse and kids come ask “What are you making?!” with anticipation in their eyes.

TIP: If you are using nuts, try chopped pecans, walnuts, almonds or cashews. So yummy, and it just adds extra texture to this dessert.

Not only is this dessert great right out of the oven, it is good at room temperature, too. I like mine reheated and served with cold vanilla ice cream.
