If you decide to share.
This recipe uses a lot of fresh onions. Don’t worry, they will cook down and turn this heavenly shade of golden brown. And the smell of the onions cooking will have everyone in the house asking “What are you making?”
Whether you are hosting a party for the Big Game at your house or taking a recipe to a friend’s house, this is the dip recipe for you. (Everyone will ask for the recipe.)
Of course there’s no point in making a delicious Sour Cream + Cheddar French Onion Dip unless you have super snacks. Super snacks like Snyder’s of Hanover® Pretzels and Cape Cod® Potato Chips.
A thick and savory French onion dip like ours needs a crunchy dipper. For our Big Game Party, we picked this snack combo:
- Snyder’s of Hanover Mini Pretzels
- Snyder’s of Hanover Butter Snaps
- Cape Cod Kettle Potato Chips original flavor
The size and crunch of these salty snacks make them perfect for scooping out the onion dip. You won’t be able to stop snacking. (No worries, we aren’t throwing a penalty flag.)

These snacks are my go-to’s and take my BIG GAME celebrations from so-so to extraordinary. There are so many varieties to choose from, there is something for everyone to snack on at your party. So much crunch and flavor right out of the bag is a major time saver.
And I’d like to point out that I did major snacking on the pretzels and chips while I was cooking. Chef’s privilege.
How to Make French Onion Dip:
- First heat butter over low to medium low heat. Peel and slice onions into rings about ⅛ inch - ¼ inch thick. Cook the onions slowly in the butter for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Remove onions from heat and let cool. Chop into small pieces.
- Next, in a large bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and sour cream until smooth. Stir in the mayo, Worcestershire, and seasonings.
- Then fold in the cheddar cheese and then the cooled caramelized onions until well combined.
- Serve at room temperature or chilled with your favorite Cape Cod Chips and Snyder's of Hanover Pretzel snacks.
- Refrigerate any leftovers.
Once the onions have cooked and cooled, time to work on the base of the dip recipe. Combine the sour cream, cream cheese, mayo and other ingredients together until smooth. Stir in a few flavor boosters and fold in your favorite brand of sharp cheddar cheese. Get the complete recipe at the end of this post for all of our secrets.
You can use your favorite cheese, but I love sharp cheddar for this recipe. The strong flavor pairs well with the golden onions and the salty snacks.
Fold in those delicious onions and you have a game-winning Sour Cream + Cheddar French Onion Dip like no other.
You can serve the dip room temperature with your Snyder’s of Hanover Pretzels and Cape Cod Potato Chips. Or you can chill it before hand.
For maximum flavor, make it the night before and chill in the fridge. All of those flavors meld together. So good.
Both of our snack choices are perfect for dipping. Kettle cooked Cape Cod chips are crisp and big and that perfect salty bite. The buttery Snyder’s of Hanover are the perfect size to get a big scoop of onion dip, too.
