Hungarian Stew

Hungarian Stew

This recipe for Hungarian Stew is one of my favorite all-time food memories.

Everyone has food memories, right? That amazing grilled steak you had at that restaurant a few years ago. Or that crazy-indulgent dessert your grandmother used to make for you as a kid? Those awesome little red, white and blue popsicles they had in your school cafeteria?

Isn’t it wonderful how so many of our life experiences involve food….the flavors, the surroundings, the smells. You can literally taste that memory.

So let’s go back about 15 years to one of my favorite girls’ weekends ever. To the meal I have been craving for over a decade.

(Hungarian Stew on a girls’ weekend? Yep.) Continue Reading…

Mountain Dew Apple Dumplings

Mountain Dew Apple Dumplings

The first time I tried Mountain Dew Apple Dumplings was a few months ago when my lovely and talented step-daughter made them for the whole family.

(Have I mentioned how much I like it when the kids cook for me? No? Let me say it again. Maybe my children will see it. I WHEN THE KIDS COOK!)

And now there’s no turning back. WOW. Now she makes them for us just about every time we see her.

Hands down this easy dessert recipe is in my Top 10 Favorite Desserts.  Unbelievably delicious and only takes a few minutes to make. Gooey and warm like apple pie on the inside with a sugary-cinnamon flaky dumpling crust….*wipes drool off of the computer screen*

p.s. these are also excellent for weekend breakfast.

Rachel’s Best Gumbo Recipe

Rachel's Best Gumbo Recipe

Gumbo. One of my favorite meals of all time. Especially in the summer, sitting outside with an ice-cold drink, eating a spicy, filling bowl of gumbo.  It is also one of my daughter’s favorites, and it is the only way I can get her in the kitchen to cook. Oh yeah, she cooked the best gumbo recipe ever, not me.

Isn’t it funny how things taste better when someone else makes them?

Full of chicken, sausage, okra, and veggies…and of course, a well browned roux and a very special seasoning.

Fathers Day Faves

The fastest way to a man's heart is through his stomach. That statement is most true for Dad. View our collection of recipes for a Fathers Day Feast!

They say the fastest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, and that statement is probably most true for your Dad(s). I bet just about everyone can think of a dish that your father loves to eat. You know, one of those Fathers Day Faves. A kick back in the recliner kind of meal.

My dad? He loves cabbage slaw made with Miracle Whip and plenty of ground black pepper. Oh, and extra-lemony Lemon Ice Box Pie. My husband loves a nice juicy ribeye, some potatoes, and yellow cake with chocolate icing.

What is your father’s favorite thing to eat?

Whether your father likes to keep it simple with a meat and potatoes kind of meal, or maybe something on the sweeter side, cook Dad up a special treat on Fathers Day.

We have put together a collection of great recipe ideas for Dad’s special day!

7-Up Cake

My grandmother's 7-Up Cake is a favorite dessert from my childhood. I can still remember the smell of it baking. Ours was almost (almost) as good.

I can remember when my Grandmama Goldie made her 7-Up Cake. I remember what it tasted like, what it smelled like. Pretty sure I tricked my little brother out of his piece a couple of times. (Yeah, I was a mean big sister.)

I always thought it was the craziest thing ever when my grandmother would pour a little glass bottle of 7-Up into her cake. But we are talking about a woman who could throw together a meal like you’ve never seen for a brood of roughneck cowboys. You know, AFTER she had cooked all day working at the local school cafeteria.

When I ran across her recipe in an old community cookbook, I knew immediately I had to give it a shot.

It is almost as good as I remember. Almost…. Continue Reading…
