Honey Garlic Salmon Stir Fry

Where are my salmon lovers at? I see you guys. You’ve been patiently waiting for a recipe, I know. This one is for you. This one pan delight features fresh salmon with crisp-tender veggies and a mouthwatering homemade honey garlic sauce that is so easy. Oh, and did I mention this gorgeous plate of yummy is done in just a few minutes. *applause*

Honey Garlic Salmon Stir Fry ….because we all need a new way to prepare salmon.

Salmon is one of the easiest (in my opinion) types of fish to work with. It is so full of flavor, rich and flaky, and looks stunning on a plate. I’m partial to a simply prepared, pan seared salmon filet like this. My husband is always asking me to make these grilled salmon patties, too.

I am always on the lookout for delicious ways to work this nutrition powerhouse into my family’s diet. It is such a tasty and refreshing change from our normal routine. Plus there are so many benefits to enjoying salmon.

Benefits of Eating Salmon:

  1. Salmon is rich in essential fatty acids that your body needs to stay healthy. Omega-3, y’all.
  2. This delish fish is packed with protein. Protein is an essential nutrient that your body requires.
  3. Missing the sunshine? Eat salmon. Yep, it is a great natural source of Vitamin D.
  4. Oh, and salmon is a good source of Vitamin B12, potassium, selenium, and iron. Literally, salmon is a swimming supplement.
  5. Salmon is naturally low in saturated fat.
  6. And it tastes great. That’s the biggest benefit in my book.

Types of Salmon:

  • Chinook – more commonly referred to as “King Salmon”
  • Chum or Dog
  • Coho – “Silver”
  • Humpback – “Pink”
  • Sockeye – “Red”
  • Steelhead – also the name of my future garage band

There are many varieties of salmon to choose from, but you may be limited by your geography on what you can get your hands on. I remember as a girl growing up in Tennessee, my youngest experiences with salmon were from a can. (Granny could make a mean, Southern-style salmon patty.)

Now that food is more readily available from all over the country and the world…and as I have traveled and experienced more types of salmon…I’ve come to love salmon “outside of the can”. Lol.

Now that your brain is full of information you didn’t know you needed until today, let’s get back to this easy salmon recipe.

Ingredients Needed for Honey Garlic Salmon Stir Fry:

  • Salmon – Get it fresh, cut into bite-sized cubes. We used a pound of wild caught Atlantic salmon filet.
  • Bell peppers – Pick your favorite color, we used one yellow and one orange.
  • Onion
  • Garlic – Fresh is best finely minced, somewhere between 4 and 100 cloves, you do you. I used 6.
  • Soy sauce
  • Water
  • Honey – I only used naurally farmed honey locally harvested from a field of blueberries. True story, I’m spoiled. However, whatever you have will work.
  • Oil
  • Ginger – Just a pinch, fresh or powdered will work in this recipe
  • Cornstarch
  • Sesame seeds – Totally optional garnish for a little flair (woooo). Sliced green onions would work here as well.

My favorite part about this recipe besides the salmon is how easy it is to get that signature Asian flavor without a lot of ingredients you might not normally use. We are sticking with the basics here: soy sauce, honey, garlic, and a pinch of ginger.

TIP: If you are a fan of spice, you can turn up the heat by using red pepper flakes to your preferred level of heat.

How to Make this Salmon Stir Fry Recipe:

  1. First, prepare the salmon. Start with a fresh, boneless, skinless filet. Cut it into bite-sized cubes. (Around an inch.) Sprinkle with a pinch of salt and pepper.
  2. Next, prepare the vegetables. The peppers should be seeded and sliced, then halved. Peel the onion and cut into bite-sided wedges. Peel and mince the garlic cloves.
  3. In a wok or large skillet, heat the oil over medium high to high heat. When the oil starts to shimmer, add the salmon to the wok. Cook for 3 – 5 minutes, shaking the wok and flipping the salmon GENTLY to cook on all sides. Transfer the salmon to a bowl, cover with foil, and keep warm.
  4. Then in the same wok, add the bell peppers and onions. Cook and stir quickly for about 7 minutes or until crisp-tender.
  5. Stir in the garlic and cook until you can smell the garlic, about 1 minute.
  6. Carefully add the water soy sauce, honey, and ginger to the vegetables. Reduce heat to a simmer, and stir to combine.
  7. In a small bowl, stir together the cornstarch and 1 tablespoon of cold water. Pour this mixture into the wok and stir well.
  8. Increase heat to a low boil and cook for a minute or two until the sauce has thickened.
  9. Return the salmon to the pan, toss to coat well.
  10. Remove from heat and serve immediately. Garnish with sesame seeds if desired.

When cooking the salmon, use a gentle hand when stirring because you don’t want the salmon to fall apart. You really want to let the wok do the work to sear the outside of the fish.

TIP: For the best results, have all of your ingredients prepared, measured and ready to go BEFORE you start to cook. Since we are working with a wok at high temperatures, this recipe cooks quickly.

This recipe smells heavenly while cooking. The seared salmon with the soy-based sauce, the garlic sizzling with the vegetables. I’m getting hungry all over again just thinking about it.

Tips + Ideas for Best Results:

  • Pick the freshest ingredients you can get your hands on.
  • Cut the salmon in bite sized pieces about the same size so they cook evenly.
  • Don’t overcook the salmon or it will be dry. Medium is perfectly acceptable when cooking salmon.
  • Use a gentle hand when stirring and flipping the salmon. You don’t want it to fall apart. Let the wok do the work by searing the outside, shake the pan gently and let the salmon roll around. Wok on.
  • Feel free to swap up the veggies. Water chestnuts, green onions, zucchini, broccoli…these would make excellent substitutions or additions to this salmon recipe.
  • Be ready to wok and roll before starting this recipe. Have your ingredients prepared, measured and within easy reach.
  • Spice it up with red pepper flakes or your favorite hot chili sauce.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds or sliced green onions for more texture.
  • This stir fry recipe is delicious all by itself. Serve with prepared rice or hot noodles if you’d like.

Ingredients
