Avocados are so delicious, and our Fresh Guacamole Recipe uses simple ingredients to highlight their flavor and texture. Sometimes, guacamole is too creamy, or bland, or just ICK. This recipe was born in my kitchen as a response to bad guacamole. I thought "we can do better than what we are eating in restaurants".
And we did. The key is FRESH. Fresh lime juice, fresh tomato, fresh onion, fresh cilantro. Fresh, fresh, fresh.
The Secret to the Best Fresh Guacamole
The secret? Fresh avocados. Fresh limes. Fresh tomatoes. FRESH FRESH FRESH.
Use a fresh lime. It really is the secret. Lime zest gives the guacamole another layer of flavor without being overpowering. Keep in mind the zest and juice flavor will get stronger when you let it sit....so after combining, give it a rest before tasting and adding any more.
Ingredients Needed for Guacamole:
- Avocados
- Tomato
- Onion - We used a red/purple onion, but you can also use white or yellow.
- Lime - This guacamole recipe uses the juice and the zest.
- Cilantro
- Garlic
- Frank's Hot Sauce - Or your favorite brand. I like Frank's because it adds a lot of tangy flavor without too much heat.
- Salt & pepper to taste

We do not add any mayo or cream cheese to our fresh guacamole recipe. To me, it just doesn't need it. Toss everything in a bowl, mash it up with a fork and stir. Don't over mash, the chunks are great.
How to Make Guacamole:
- Slice avocados in half and remove the pits. Score the flesh with a knife both ways, and scoop the avocado into a medium sized bowl.
- Zest the lime and finely chop it. Add 1 teaspoon of the lime zest to the avocados.
- Roll the lime on the counter with your hand, and cut in half and juice. Get all of it out, you want the lime flavor. Add juice to the bowl. Toss to coat. Let sit 5 minutes. The lime flavor will get stronger as it sits, so before you add more, taste it.
- Add tomato, onion, cilantro, garlic, hot sauce. Mash the large chunks with a fork, but leave some of them. Stir all ingredients well to combine.Taste, then add salt and pepper if desired.
- To store any leftovers, place a piece of plastic wrap directly on the guacamole then cover with a tightly fitting lid. If there is any browning after refrigeration just give it a quick stir.
Once you get this recipe nailed, feel free to experiment. It is really a great addition to any Mexican meal, a party appetizer, and even served as a side or topping for grilled chicken or fish.
Imagine this on a hot, grilled steak taco.
Or smeared on top of a yummy chicken sandwich. Mixed in with some rice and black beans.
Ok, I need to snap out of it. But you get my point...it is that good. Even if you think you don't like fresh guacamole...give this one a shot. You might be surprised.
