Hot Sauce Potato Salad

May 15, 2017
Hot Sauce Potato Salad

My hand quivered slightly as I held the bottle of hot sauce over the bowl of potato salad.  A bead of sweat slowly dripped down my forehead.  The kitchen was dead silent.  All you could hear was the sound of my tummy growling.

My husband said “No, don’t do it!”

I tilted my head in his direction, and I called his bluff.  Hot Sauce is going in.

Why didn’t someone think of this before now?  Tangy, spicy, pickle-y and wow.  This potato salad recipe has it all. Potato salad with classic creaminess and crunch and a pop of big hot sauce flavor.

Not only did we use a generous amount of hot sauce, but we kicked up the heat with fresh jalapeno, ground black pepper, and cayenne, too.

Because some like it hot.

Hungarian Stew

Hungarian Stew

This recipe for Hungarian Stew is one of my favorite all-time food memories.

Everyone has food memories, right? That amazing grilled steak you had at that restaurant a few years ago. Or that crazy-indulgent dessert your grandmother used to make for you as a kid? Those awesome little red, white and blue popsicles they had in your school cafeteria?

Isn’t it wonderful how so many of our life experiences involve food….the flavors, the surroundings, the smells. You can literally taste that memory.

So let’s go back about 15 years to one of my favorite girls’ weekends ever. To the meal I have been craving for over a decade.

(Hungarian Stew on a girls’ weekend? Yep.) Continue Reading…

Sweet Potato Pie with Sweet Potato Crust. New ideas in the kitchen. Ideas that don't suck. Our delicious take on a classic Southern pie recipe.

Sweet Potato Pie with Sweet Potato Crust. Yep. We are trying new ideas in the kitchen. Yummy ideas. Ideas that don’t suck. Ideas that help shave a few calories off of a classic Southern pie recipe.

You hear a lot about the health benefits of sweet potatoes. High in vitamins, potassium and fiber…blah blah blah. If it doesn’t taste good around my house, no one is gonna eat it.

So you gotta be sneaky. Not sure how sneaky this is when I disguise it with butter and brown sugar and Whiskey Whipped Cream but hey…

Sweet Potato Sausage Brunch

December 3, 2016
Sweet Potato Sausage Brunch

I need a t-shirt that says “I love sweet spuds”. Seriously, I LOVE sweet potatoes. Funny thing is, I prefer them in a savory dish, like this Sweet Potato Sausage Brunch.

Sure, they are great with traditional brown sugar, butter,  marshmallows, pecans and served as a sweet-side dish or dessert. I will be the last girl on earth to turn a sweet tater down.

But paired with spicy seasonings and a savory ingredient…hold me back.

This quick and delicious brunch is a filling and flavorful recipe you will want to make again.

Roasted Potato Salad

June 17, 2016
Yeah, we have a "thing" for potatoes. Call it recipe love. Roasted Potato Salad is yummy and summery and the potatoes have a perfect bite. Never mushy.

Roasted Potato Salad….yes! So delicious, and a little different than the normal mushy potato salad (although I have nothing against potatoes in any format). This salad has a deeper roasted flavor, the potatoes are more firm, and the skins make it a little more….country.

I also had something in the oven baking, so I took advantage of that heat and electricity by popping the potatoes in at the same time.

No more boring mashed potatoes! It is no big secret that more butter, more cheese and more sour cream turn a plain old potato into the star of the meal. Our Cheesy Mashed Potato Casserole is a perfect dish for family get-togethers, potlucks, or just a regular Tuesday night.

This recipe is inspired by my husband’s sweet aunt. I can’t remember it word for word, because she was telling me the recipe while we were eating it. My focus was on getting another forkful in my mouth. But I think I got it pretty close. Butter, sour cream, cheese. Yep! My kind of recipe from my kind of lady!

There are no special skills required. If you can hold a fork, you can make this cheesy and easy side dish!

Granny’s Fried Potato Sandwiches

April 5, 2016
Yes, we did. We fried up crispy fried potatoes in cornmeal, and loaded them up on a sandwich. This recipe from my childhood is inspired by my Granny.

There is a special place in heaven for my Granny. Obviously, not for making Fried Potato Sandwiches, but for the wonderful things about her character and work ethic as a wife, mother, and grandmother. Always smiling, always cooking, always caring. And ok, yeah, her fried potatoes.

Daddy loves to eat them on a sandwich. If you are on a diet, please, DON’T CLICK.
