The title to this should be "How to Teach Your Significant Other How to Make a Mojito". Because after two or three, you really just want to chill and let someone else be at your beck and call. Mojitos are my favorite cocktail. Ever. No competition. Slightly sweet, minty and refreshing. And as long as you don't get carried away with the Bacardi, is a nice sipping beverage.
How to Make a Mojito
About three or four years ago I planted ONE little 4 inch x 4 inch pot of mint in a side flowerbed. Man, I should have researched it some more, because mint is HIGHLY invasive. Highly delicious, but it will take over your entire flower bed in about a year.
Four years later, I have a mint bed with maybe a weed or two growing in it. It has started sprouting in our yard near the bed. When you mow the lawn, you get a nice minty face full of grass. Shrug.
For the first two or three years, I tried to fight it. Dug it up, cut it back, attempted some weed killer. Forget about it. Just embrace the mint.
Positives of having excess mint production:
- Endless supply of mint for mojitos
- Fragrant and pretty perennial plant for your flower bed
- Ants and mice don't like mint
- You can make your own mint jelly
Now, down to the making of the perfect mojito.
In my opinion, the simpler the better. Once you nail down this perfect mojito recipe, you can easily start trying new versions by adding fruit, experimenting with flavored syrups and different types of mint.
Ingredients Needed to Make a Mojito:
- Limes
- Mint leaves
- White or brown sugar
- Bacardi silver rum
- Club soda
- Crushed Ice
Hands down fave? Lime. Mint. Sugar. Soda. Oh...and Bacardi Silver. (This is not a sponsored post. However, I'm willing to negotiate a deal with Mr. Bacardi in exchange for a lifetime supply of mint.)
In a metal cup, add 3-4 mint leaves. I always rip them up by hand and smush them to release the oils and mint flavor. Add two lime wedges, sugar, and with a wooden spoon, muddle the lime, mint and sugar together.
Muddle is just another word for mash it around.
You can use brown sugar or white granulated sugar. The granules of sugar help create friction and release more of the mint flavor.

How to Make a Mojito:
- In a metal cup, place two lime wedges, torn mint leaves and sugar. Muddle together with a wooden spoon.
- Pour rum over the top and muddle some more. Pour 4 ounces of the chilled club soda over the muddled mixture, swirl gently.
- Pour into a glass of crushed ice. Top the glass with remaining club soda.
- Garnish with a lime wedge and mint sprig.
Once the lime, mint and sugar are sufficiently muddled (lol), pour the rum over the top. Gently muddle a little more with the end of the spoon. Top with about 4 ounces of chilled club soda and give it one little swirl. (If you stir too much you lose the bubbly.)
Pour over a glass of crushed ice, top with more soda, a lime wedge, and a mint sprig to feel a little fancy. After all, you now know how to make a mojito!
Enjoy the Perfect Mojito. Repeatedly. (And responsibly.)
